Q The Use of Language to Manipulate Make sure you have a good grasp of the following concepts from Chapter 3 of the text before moving forward with this handout: euphemisms, dysphemisms, sarcasm, hyperbole, and lies/deception. Your task: 1) Write a 100-150 words description of someone you know and attempt to use words, phrases, and tactics (like those listed above) to cast a particular image of this person without saying it directly. Use at least three of the rhetorical devices listed above. Don’t limit yourself to a physical description; describe what they do, how they talk, how they think – but all in a way that creates a certain, controlled impression. This image can be positive or negative. Include a word count after the description. Sample sentence: Each morning, Jineen comes crashing into the room with papers flying behind her and pens dropping to the floor. 2) Write an analysis of that description explaining your tactics, identifying any of the text concepts that you utilized. Sample analysis: I used the phrase “crashing into the room” as a dysphemism for entering. This conveyed a sense of disorganization and uncontrolled urgency.

I have a coworker named Jason that I have worked with for a few years now and he has a gift for upsetting others that comes in contact with him and his “wonderful attitude” toward his job. He is well known for bringing the drama of his personal life to work and taking it out on everyone that he speaks to. His ability to use words to his benefit causes his coworkers to be extra careful around him. He is always in the manager’s office with the door closed, reading things he has written down in a small and discrete notebook that he carries on him at all times.
